It’s true what they say, we can be our own worst enemies!

When we’re blocked emotionally, we don’t have a healthy relationship with our feelings. We’re not able to express or communicate them. In fact, we have a hard time understanding them at all- this was me, I had numbed out my feelings so much from childhood. I couldn’t really even pinpoint the emotions I was feeling until I was in my 30’s when I started doing personal development work.
Our emotions can leave us confused, and we’re unable to come to terms with them. The feelings we’ve fought so hard to avoid become even more overwhelming and overpowering.
We might find ourselves easily triggered, or we might have intense emotional reactions- like anger, rage, sadness, guilt, lashing out at people, or harming ourselves.
Others might find themselves retreating inwards, unable to deal with difficult negative emotions. These emotions leave us suffering in silence and keeping our feelings to ourselves.
Our blockages cause intense emotional highs and low, extreme mood swings, along with depression and anxiety.
Emotional blockages can show up as an array of physical symptoms as well such as migraines, headaches, stomach pain and discomfort, diarrhea, constipation, back pain, and unexplained chronic pain throughout the body.
An emotional blockage is a defence mechanism of our brain that prevents us from feeling emotions normally. It prevents us from moving forward in our life and at the same time prevents us from thinking clearly and affects our daily actions. Not being able to think clearly, not knowing what to say, or being confused can be some indicators of emotional blockage.
So how can we get blocked?
Situations that can trigger an emotional blockage are often negative or traumatic. They are stressful situations that the person is not used to dealing with or has no coping skills for it. For example:
Traumatic experience: accident, rape, assault or attack, infidelity
The sudden death of a loved one
Breaking up or loss of a partner.
Dismissal or change in employment status
Diagnosis of a serious or chronic illness
Unexpected and unwanted change
An emotional blockage becomes a problem when it remains over time and begins to affect us in other areas that it didn’t previously. It becomes a problem when it begins to hinder our goals and life dreams.
By prolonging the emotional blockage over time without actually putting the emotional work it takes to process the situation, the person will begin to feel pain without being able to express it. It starts to become part of our day-to-day life and the situation starts repeating itself in our minds, affecting our concentration, cognitive skills, emotions and social skills.
These emotional road-blocks can be big or small, as it’s an unconscious decision that your body makes. They can actually stem back through generations, and past lives, so releasing them can be a challenge as well as an incredible part of the healing process and an opportunity to maintain the integrity of your mind.
If we can’t or don’t know how to deal with the emotions we are facing. We can start to suppress, avoid, distract, or escape the emotions through food, social media, alcohol, drugs and more all in an effort to numb out, not feel or deal with the emotions at hand and sweeping it all, under the rug. Never really confronting or resolving the issues. Not moving through the pain, processing it or healing from it, our pain, processing it, or healing from it.
The discomfort and weight of our difficult emotions are terrifying to us, so we practice avoidance. When we don’t feel these emotions, however, we aren’t able to heal from them.
